MVAC hosts Indie Lens Pop-Up Free Film Screening

The Magic Valley Arts Council and Idaho Humanities Council invite you to attend the Indie Lens Pop-Up free film screening of The First Rainbow Coalition, at noon on Friday, January 24 at the Twin Falls Center for the Arts, 195 River Vista Place. Join us for a free bowl of soup as we learn the history and enduring legacy of a groundbreaking multi-ethnic coalition that rocked Chicago in the 1960s. Film runtime is approximately 56 minutes. A moderated discussion led by Russ Tremayne, College of Southern Idaho Associate Professor of History, will follow the film.

Brought to us by Independent Television Service, Indie Lens Pop-Up offers free film screenings of documentary films which will be showcased on PBS’ Independent Lens, an Emmy® Award-winning weekly series airing on PBS Monday nights. Check your local PBS listings for times.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Idaho Humanities Council, a State-based program of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The First Rainbow Coalition, by Ray Santisteban, is set in 1969. The Chicago Black Panther Party began to form a multi-ethnic coalition with the Young Lords Organization and the Young Patriots. Banding together in one of the most segregated cities in post-war America, the Rainbow Coalition changed the face of 1960s Chicago politics and created an organizing model for future activists and politicians.
